Some people leave behind accomplishments.

Others leave behind communities.

Joshua Russo did both.

Josh was the visionary who transformed a simple idea into what is now known as the Caspar Cove Project - a thriving community of divers, scientists, volunteers, and ocean advocates working together to restore Northern California's underwater forests.

When much of the North Coast's bull kelp disappeared following marine heatwaves and the explosion of purple sea urchins, Josh refused to believe the story had to end there.

He believed that ordinary people could become part of the solution.

Instead of waiting for someone else to act, he invited the community into the water.

That invitation continues today.

A Vision Bigger Than a Dive

Josh understood that kelp restoration wasn't simply about removing purple sea urchins.

It was about building a community around hope.

Long before community-based restoration became widely recognized, Josh was bringing together recreational divers, commercial divers, scientists, conservation organizations, photographers, local businesses, and curious newcomers around a shared purpose.

Everyone had something to contribute.

Everyone belonged.

He welcomed first-time divers with the same enthusiasm as seasoned veterans.

He celebrated every volunteer.

He believed relationships were just as important as restoration.

That philosophy continues to shape the Caspar Cove Project today.

Building a Community

Under Josh's leadership, Caspar Cove became much more than a restoration site.

It became a place where:

• 🌿 Scientists and volunteers worked side by side.

• 📚 People learned about kelp forests and ocean ecology.

• 🍲 Potlucks became part of the restoration experience.

• 🔥 Beach fires became places where stories were shared & friendships were formed.

For Josh, restoring kelp forests and building community were inseparable.

He understood that people protect what they love, and they love what they know.

A Leader Who Led by Example

Josh wasn't someone who simply organized restoration efforts.

He was in the water.

Month after month.

Year after year.

He showed up before sunrise to prepare for community dives.

He welcomed new participants.

He answered questions.

He encouraged nervous divers.

He worked alongside everyone else with humility, generosity, and an unmistakable sense of purpose.

His leadership wasn't defined by titles.

It was defined by presence.

His Legacy Lives On

Although Josh passed away in 2025, his impact continues to ripple through every part of the Caspar Cove Project.

Every Community Dive.

Every volunteer welcomed at the Kelp Desk.

Every new diver who discovers the joy of contributing to something larger than themselves.

Every story shared around the potluck table.

Every patch of kelp that returns.

His legacy isn't only found in the work he began.

It's found in the people he inspired to continue it.

Today, hundreds of volunteers carry that vision forward, ensuring that Caspar Cove remains a place where restoration is driven by both science and community, and where everyone is invited to become part of the solution.

Honoring Josh

Each year, we honor Josh through the Joshua Russo Award, presented during the Caspar Cove Project Awards Ceremony to someone who embodies the generosity, leadership, and spirit that defined his life.

His memorial plaque now rests beneath the waters of Caspar Cove - one of his most beloved places - serving as a quiet reminder of the lasting impact one person can have.

As divers pass by, they are reminded that this community exists because someone believed that people, working together, could help restore an underwater forest.

He was right.

Continuing the Legacy

One of Josh's greatest gifts was helping people realize that they didn't need to be marine biologists or professional conservationists to make a meaningful difference.

They simply needed to show up.

Today, every diver who enters the water, every volunteer who greets visitors, every donor who supports the project, and every person who shares the story of Caspar Cove becomes part of the legacy Josh began.

His vision continues to grow through all of us.

Josh showed up. And so will we.
